Jude 1:3-4 Earnestly Contend For The Faith
INTRODUCTION: There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. Eph. 4:4-7
WHAT GOD HAS GIVEN IS WORTH OUR LABOR - 1:3
*Jude Recognized That Believers must Be Informed - "Beloved..." (Agaphtoi)
*Jude Recognized the Importance of His Task - "...when I gave all diligence.." - spoudhn, meaning speed, care as doing business, haste.
This charge I commit unto thee, son Timothy, according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; I Tim. 1:18
*Jude Recognized That All Believers Were Important as Part of the Redeemed - "to write unto you of the common salvation" - koinhV swthriaV -
To Titus, mine own son after the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour. Titus 1:4
"During the Spanish-American War, Clara Barton was overseeing the work of the Red Cross in Cuba. One day Colonel Theodore Roosevelt came to her, wanted to buy food for his sick and wounded Rough Riders. But she refused to sell him any. Roosevelt was perplexed. His men needed the help and he was prepared to pay out of his own funds. When he asked someone why he could not buy the supplies, he was told, "Colonel, just ask for it!" A smile broke over Roosevelt's face. Now he understood--the provisions were not for sale. All he had to do was simply ask and they would be given freely." Daily Bread, Oct. 11, 1992
For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established; That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. Romans 1:12
WHAT THE SAINTS HAVE RECEIVED FROM THE LAST GENERATION IS WORTH OUR LABOR - 1:3
*Jude Recognized There Was a Need in the Church - "it was needful for me to write unto you..." - anagkhn - constrained necessity, as in holding your arm so that you will not leave.
*Jude Recognized That Need for Dedication to the Truth - "and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith..." - epagwnizesqai - fight, struggle, agonize.
Now Jude will set before us the reason we should contend for the faith. Something is happening to the church, and Jude sounds an alarm. Kenneth Wuest
"And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, in meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; and that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will" (2 Tim. 2:24-26).
"The faith" was the body of truth given once for all. In the Book of Acts it is called the apostles' doctrine: "And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers" (Acts 2:42). "And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers."
*Jude Recognized That the Message of the Gospel Should Not Change - "which was once delivered unto the saints." - paradoqeish - entrusted as a gift.
Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. 2 Tim. 1:13-14
A businessman well known for his ruthlessness once announced to writer Mark Twain, "Before I die I mean to make a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. I will climb Mount Sinai and read the 10 Commandments aloud at the top." "I have a better idea," replied Twain. "You could stay in Boston and keep them." Moody Bible Institute's Today in the Word, September, 1991, p. 32.
"The life of Christianity consists of possessive pronouns" says Martin Luther. It is one thing to say, "Christ is a Saviour"; it is quite another thing to say, "He is my Saviour and my Lord." The devil can say the first; the true Christian alone can say the second.
We having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore have I spoken; we also believe, and therefore speak; 2 Cor. 4:13
A SOLEMN WARNING SHOULD BE SOUNDED OUT REGARDING APOSTASY - 1:4
There are no true believers mentioned in these passages. The Bible itself teaches that there are persons who profess faith, and yet are not of the faith, Romans 9:6; 1 John 2:9, Revelation 3:1. John says of some: "They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us," 1 John 2:19.
*Jude Recognized That False Teachers Had Infiltrated the Church - "or there are certain men crept in unawares,"- pareisedusan - stealthy as a thief, clothed differently than everyone else.
Crept - Duno means "to enter"; the preposition eis means "into"; and para means "beside." It means "to enter alongside." Vincent Word Studies: "To get in by the side, to slip in a side door." McGee
For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples after them. Therefore watch, and remember, that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears. Acts 20:29-31
*Jude Recognized the Wicked Character of These False Teachers - "who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness"
"ordained" - progegrammenoi - The word ordained means "to write beforehand." It simply means that other writers had sounded the warning about apostates.
Jude is saying, "I'm not telling you something new -- others have written of this also and have warned you of that which is coming." —J. Vernon McGee's Thru The Bible
"In Jude's day the apostasy was Gnosticism. Gnosticism taught that the body was essentially evil, that all matter was evil, and that the spirit alone was good. The conclusion drawn from this was that it didn't matter what a man did with his body. He was free to satisfy the lusts of the body. He was free to practice blatant immorality, shameless sin, and arrogantly and proudly to flout that sin publicly. That was a perversion of grace." J. Vernon McGee's Thru The Bible
Ted Turner criticized fundamentalist Christianity and said Jesus probably would "be sick at his stomach" over the way his ideas have been "twisted," the Atlanta Journal-Constitution... Turner made his remarks at a banquet in Orlando, Fla., where he was given an award by the American Humanist Association for his work on behalf of the environment and world peace. Turner said he had a strict Christian upbringing and at one time considered becoming a missionary. "I was saved seven or eight times," the newspaper quoted him as saying. But he said he became disenchanted with Christianity after his sister died, despite his prayers. Turner said the more he strayed from his faith, "the better I felt."
Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts, 2 Tim. 3:5-6
*Jude Recognized the Central Problem with These False Teachers - "and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ." THE ACID TEST OF APOSTASY
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 Pet. 2:1
"No deity will save us, we must save ourselves. Promises of immortal salvation or fear of eternal damnation are both illusory and harmful." Humanist Manifesto II, signed by Betty Friedan, Founder of National Organization Humanist Manifest I and II, Prometheus Books, 1973.
Conclusion: I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. 2 Tim. 4:7-7
