Chapter One Biblical Theology: A Succession of Logical Truth All biblical theology must center around God: His work in the universe, His design and purpose, and His motives for personal action. Man is certainly not the center focus of the universe, even though he would love to hold that position. The rationalism of man and his humanistic inclinations view God as a secondary source regarding man's destiny. Since most men have a limited view of God and an exaggerated concept of themselves, it becomes indispensable for man to have a right approach to God. Man must see himself in correct relation to the Creator of the universe. Once man is aware of this proper relation to God, he can then become aware of his personal accountability to God. God desires to see man in a continuing personal relationship with Him. Therefore, it behooves us to begin this discussion with the basis for man's existence and origin. To adequately study this logical progression of theology, we should be reminded that our theology should be derived from Scriptural truth, not man's seemingly logical reason. This is absolutely critical, because; theology is a systematized understanding of God. However, theology is more than just knowledge and understanding. It is the actuating of knowledge into fruit that is evidence of life. Man is not judged by knowledge alone. Theology is only successfully evidenced by practical application in our lives. The Bible clearly teaches this principle: "For the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, whereof ye heard before in the word of the truth of the Gospel. Which is come unto you, as it is in all the world; and bringeth forth fruit, as it doth also in you, since the day ye heard of it, and knew the grace of God in truth" Colossians 1:5,6 "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them." Ephesians 2:10 True theology is only that theology which brings the student to a clear and vibrant understanding of Calvary. Today's theology is in need of a fresh view of life. This theology must be taught from a correct perspective. We will begin with the basis for man's existence and origin, and continue progressively to the need of mankind to be in submission to the authority of God. When man is under God's authority he becomes aware of his proper place in the world, and begins to see his greatest need: the deliverance of his soul from sin! Once man has determined his need, he must make the logical progression - to know the truth about his Creator. As man studies the Word of God, he investigates, thinking through the truth that he has learned. The Holy Spirit then testifies to the truth of the Scripture, and to the Gospel of the Lord Jesus. At this point the sinner arrives at a point of decision: whether to receive or reject the Lord Jesus Christ's offer of free salvation. As each sinner comes to the Savior, he should immediately begin attending a New Testament local church and place himself under the authority of a God-called pastor. As the church fulfills its responsibilities, the new convert should grow in grace and in knowledge of the Lord Jesus. The ultimate goal is to honor and glorify God. |
