The Irrefutable Question
Luke 20:39-47
Introduction: The basis for any religion is held
based upon the legitimacy of its founder and organizer. What did they teach?
What was their character? Is what they said verifiable?
Buddha, Krishna, Mohammed, John Smith, and others, each had a following, but
what were their credentials? Each was a man, even though seen by other men as
great. Each died and is still in the grave. None of them taught that they were
themselves God.. Each is known for their imperfections:
Buddha taught piety and humility, but was known to have difficulty with both.
Krishna taught regarding Nirvana, peace, and reincarnation, but hoped that it
was all true.
Mohammed believed that the world should be Muslim, and everyone who was not of
his faith, should die. He was arrogant, conceited and known to be a womanizer.
John Smith was arrested, failed miserably in his life and could never prove that
he received Divine revelation.
Jesus taught clearly that He was not only the Son of God, but God the Son. His
miracles attest to His greatness and power. His exemplary life and conduct
showed for His character. His
empty tomb testifies to His position as the Son of God.
The Pharisees could not see Jesus as God, but reasoned in their minds that it
could not be so. Jesus taught clearly His position and asked questions which
were irrefutable.
*Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a
virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.
Ref. Matthew 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a
son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with
us. (Greek: literally, “with us is the God”
*John 1:1-3 ¶ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the
Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by
him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Ref. John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld
his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and
truth.
*Psalm 110:1 The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make
thine enemies thy footstool.
Ref. Hebrews 1:8-12 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever
and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom... And, Thou,
Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens
are the works of thine hands: They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they
all shall wax old as doth a garment; And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up,
and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.
*Romans 9:4-5 Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth the adoption, and the
glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and
the promises; Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh Christ
came, who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
*John 5:15-18 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus, which had
made him whole. And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay
him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day. But Jesus answered
them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. Therefore the Jews sought the more
to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God
was his Father, making himself equal with God.
*John 5:21-23 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even
so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath
committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as
they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father
which hath sent him.
*NOTE: Whenever Jesus refers to Himself as the “I am” the Jews were angered.
The Term “I am” in Greek is ego eimi, and is never used by Greeks or Jews to
designate anyone but God Himself. When Jesus used the term with the following
concepts:
I am the way
I am the door
I am the vine
I am the good shepherd
I am that I am.
I am the Light of the world
*John 10:28-33 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never
perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave
them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my
Father's hand. I and my Father are one. Then the Jews took up stones again to
stone him. Jesus answered them, Many good works have I shewed you from my
Father; for which of those works do ye stone me? The Jews answered him, saying,
For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou,
being a man, makest thyself God.
*John 8:56-59 Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was
glad. Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast
thou seen Abraham? Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before
Abraham was, I am. Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid
himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so
passed by.
*Philippians 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who,
being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made
himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made
in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself,
and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also
hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at
the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in
earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that
Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
*Titus 2:13-14 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the
great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ...
* Revelation 1:7-8 Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him,
and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail
because of him. Even so, Amen. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the
ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the
Almighty.
*Revelation 5:11 And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about
the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten
thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud
voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and
wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature
which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in
the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and
glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb
for ever and ever.
