Three Fold Ministry: Offering, Sacrifice and Service - Philippians 2:17
Chapter two gives four examples of great men and their spiritual concepts regarding their life, character and ministry priorities.
The first person mentioned was Jesus, described, as the Creator Who is powerful, compassionate, supreme, perfect and matchless.
Now, Paul turned to three powerful men as examples: Himself, Timothy and Epaphroditus.
PAUL: His Attitude About His Pending Death and Current Ministry - 2:17
Yea, and if I be offered – all ei kai spendomai - Pres Pass Ind - ready to be offered, to pour out as a drink offering, and is used of someone whose blood is poured out in a violent death for the cause of God in worship.
This word is used to describe Paul. 2 Tim. 4:6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.
This word is used to describe believers. Heb 5:1 For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins:
Heb 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
1 Pet. 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
Rev. 8:3 And another angel came and stood at the altar, having a golden censer; and there was given unto him much incense, that he should offer it with the prayers of all saints upon the golden altar which was before the throne.
This word is used to describe the ministry of Christ: Heb 7:27 Who needeth not daily, as those high priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, and then for the people’s: for this he did once, when he offered up himself.
Heb 9:7 But into the second went the high priest alone once every year, not without blood, which he offered for himself, and for the errors of the people:
Heb 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
Heb 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
upon the sacrifice – epi th qusia - victim –
This word is used to describe Paul. Here in Phil 2:17
This word is used to describe the sacrifice that every believer should make:
Heb 13:16 But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
1 Pet. 2:5 Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.
This word is used to describe the sacrifice of Christ. - Heb 9:26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
Heb 10:5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
Heb 10:8 Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
Heb 10:12 But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
Heb 10:26 For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins,
and service of your faith - kai leitrourgia thV pistewV - The word "service" means "religious service." It was used of the high priestly work of Christ.
This word is also used to describe the ministry of Paul. Here is Phil. 2:17
Rom. 15:31 That I may be delivered from them that do not believe in Judaea; and that my service which I have for Jerusalem may be accepted of the saints;
Phil. 4:18 But I have all, and abound: I am full, having received of Epaphroditus the things which were sent from you, an odour of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, wellpleasing to God.
This word is also used to describe the ministry of believers. Eph 6:7 With good will doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men:
Heb 13:15 By him therefore let us offer the sacrifice of praise to God continually, that is, the fruit of our lips giving thanks to his name.
Phil. 2:30 Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.
This word is also used to describe the ministry of Christ. Heb 9:9 Which was a figure for the time then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make him that did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience;
Heb 7:24 But this man, because he continueth ever, hath an unchangeable priesthood.
**The Result of Every Believer Offering, Sacrificing and Serving: AI joy, and rejoice with you all.@ - Paul says, "if you hear that I am released, rejoice! If you hear that I have been executed, rejoice! It is the will of God that counts."
A Spartan soldier's mother would say as she gave her son his shield, "Son, either this, or upon this." Either fight or be carried back on the shield.
Conclusion: Paul sums up all three tasks of offering, sacrificing, and serving in Romans
12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Offering (present your bodies)
Sacrifice (a living sacrifice)
Serving (reasonable service)
