The Author of Eternal Salvation - Hebrews 5:8-9
5:8 Though he were a Son, - kaiper wn uioV - "Although" He was and is the Son of God and is exalted in the heavens, and the Creator of the worlds, yet he was willing to learn experimentally what is meant by obedience in the midst of sufferings.
yet learned he obedience - emaqen (2nd Aor Act )
And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him. Luke 2:40
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. Luke 2:52
Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. John 4:34
And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. John 8:29
He was willing to test the power of obedience in sufferings publically and become personally acquainted with the nature of that obedience, during profound suffering. This would show the world that the Lord Jesus was qualified to be the Savior of the world.
He set the supreme example, and has shown that perfect obedience may be demonstrated in the greatest time of testing.
And he went a little further, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt. Matt. 26:39
Obedience, not from being the Son of God, but from His sufferings. As the Son, He was always obedient to the will of the Father. However, in his humanity the special obedience was needed to show His qualification as our High Priest.
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Phil. 2:6-8
John 4:34 "Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work."
John 6:38 "For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me."
He always did his Father's will, but he grew in experience as in wisdom and stature and in the power of sympathy with us.
...Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me,...And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. John 8:28-29
by the things which he suffered; - af wn epaqe (Aor Act Ind) - Voluntary suffering: the aim of obedience was for the glory of God and His eternal purpose. He showed His was qualified to have compassion, due to His suffering. Heb. 2:10,18; 4:15
5:9 and being made perfect - teleiwqeiV - Aor Pass Ptc teleiwqeiV is only here in the N.T. - Having triumphed, or fulfilled His ultimate destiny, completely realized, fully accomplished. The meaning of the word: the bringing of a person or thing to a goal which was been fixed by God.
The Messiah had reached the desire goal which was decreed and appointed for His priesthood. This ending point had been reached with His substitution for sinners on the Cross.
he became - egeneto - Having been brought to this place in the plan of God
the Author - pasin aitioV / used of a person who is the cause or has the cause of something in themselves inherently. Cf. Heb. 12:2 - of eternal salvation - swtarioV aiwniou
Eph. 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:
Rev. 13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
unto all them that obey Him - upakouousin - Pres Act Ind - to give ear or listen, Lit. Submissive acceptance. Those who come to Christ by faith. Salvation is offered to all men and effective for those who come to Christ and obey by faith.
But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: John 1:12
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: Rom. 5:1
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. John 3:17-18
