The Unchangeable Character of Christ - Hebrews 13:8-9
13:8 AJesus Christ the same@ - autoV - himself, herself, themselves, itself, the same
Ayesterday,@ - cqeV - past // Aand today,@ - shneron - present
AAnd for ever@ - aiwnaV - future - never changing - Cf. John 5:17-18 Past, Present, Future (for ever, an unbroken age, perpetuity of time, eternity, period of time, age).
Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed: But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end. Psalms 102:25-27
Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. Isaiah 48:12
Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, hath sent me. Isaiah 48:16
And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail. Heb 1:12
Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. Psalms 90:2
For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night. Psalms 90:4
Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. Isaiah 44:6
I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty. Rev 1:8
Because of Christ=s immutable character, His doctrine is pure, enduring, reliable, and fixed. Paul warns the Hebrews not to deviate from the concise doctrine of Christ. He teaches them that grace will "establish" them - not some foolish liturgical theology, but the reality of Christ in you!
*Consistent doctrine is the product of a never-changing God and Savior! Sound doctrine is only found in the Word of God. We should not change our doctrine as we would change our clothes. Man made religions and traditions are constantly changing. Fads of Bible teaching come and go, preachers with new ideas, compromise and questionable practices promote themselves and their doctrine continuously, but our God and His Word are enduring and eternal. The Bible stays the same. 2 Tim. 3:16
We are to be established in truth, not change from the truth, not follow those who change the truth, refuse to fall prey to new fades in Christianity, and shun different and strange doctrines.
AFor it is a good thing for the heart to be established with grace@ - not with legalistic regulations based on the changing whims of man - but sound, never changing, consistent, incorruptible, doctrine which brings man to the feet of Christ and the grace of God in truth!
Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth. Titus 1:14
The world is continually trying to change or deceive God=s people so they will not obey the truth of the Scripture. HOW?
1. By perverting the Gospel (Gal. 6:6-10)
2. By denying the Lord (2 Pet. 2:1-2)
3. By deceiving many regarding who Christ is (Matt. 24:5,24)
4. By transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ (2 Cor. 11:13-15).
Beloved, when I gave
all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me
to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith
which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in
unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men,
turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God,
and our Lord Jesus Christ.
Jude 1:3-4
We should hold to sound doctrine and not be deceived:
Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple. Romans 16:17-18
But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Romans 6:17
