Godly Correction, Hebrews 12:5-11
Introduction: Godly correction (chastisement) is designed by our Creator for the purpose of molding our character and giving us instruction. Correction is from one source: the Lord. The worldly authority disciplines after their own pleasure, but the Lord for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness (12:10)
Although this chastening is not fun (Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous:), it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness, but only to those who want to benefit from God’s instruction, unto them which are exercised thereby.
The Lord uses structures of authority to accomplish His purpose and plan for our correction: parents, employers, governmental agencies, spiritual leaders, friends, and our heavenly Father Himself. The keys to “surviving” and benefiting from discipline or chastisement, is to recognize who or what the Lord is using to bring the correction, then responding to that authority properly (biblically), then recognizing that it is for our benefit in eternity, and that it will eventually lead to the peaceable fruit of righteousness (we will be more prepared and worthy to serve the Living Christ).
He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. Prov. 13:24
The rod and reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame. Prov. 29:15
Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him. Prov. 22:15
CORRECTION BY A PASTOR OR SPIRITUAL LEADERS
These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee. Tit. 2:15
Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. Acts 11:23
As ye know how we exhorted and comforted and charged every one of you, as a father doth his children, 1 Thess. 2:11
Them that sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear. I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality. I Tim. 5:20-21
I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. 2 Tim. 4:1-2
1 Pet. 5:5 Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning. Prov. 9:8-9
It is
better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of
fools.
Eccles. 7:5
But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. Heb. 3:13
And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching. Heb 10:24-25
1 Pet. 2:18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.
Eph 6:5 Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
Col 3:22 Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God:
1 Tim. 6:1-2 Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. And they that have believing masters, let them not despise them, because they are brethren; but rather do them service, because they are faithful and beloved, partakers of the benefit. These things teach and exhort.
Tit. 2:9-10 Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; Not purloining, but shewing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.
And whosoever will not do the law of thy God, and the law of the king, let judgment be executed speedily upon him, whether it be unto death, or to banishment, or to confiscation of goods, or to imprisonment. Ezra 7:26
Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work, Titus 3:1
Col. 2:20 Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances,
Thy sons have fainted, they lie at the head of all the streets, as a wild bull in a net: they are full of the fury of the LORD, the rebuke of thy God. Isa. 51:20
As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Rev. 3:19
I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death. Ps. 118:7-8
Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law; That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked. Ps. 94:12-13
